The Senate on Wednesday soft-pedaled on its quest to override president Muhammadu Buhari’s veto of the Electoral Act (amendment) Bill.
It suspended action on the President’s withdrawal of assent to the Bill till January to enable it consult with its counterparts in the House of Representatives, which had on Tuesday said it would not discuss the issue until next month.
When the Senate met on Tuesday and President Buhari’s letter rejecting the bill was read by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, the Senators subsequently began to collect signatures of those who were ready to override President Buhari.
By the end of Tues, as many as 76 Senators were said to have submitted their signatures in the buildup to a showdown with the president. That number was more than the 73 or two-thirds of the 109 Senators needed for the Upper Chamber to override President Buhari’s veto.
The House also needs a two-third majority of its members to override President Buhari on the issue of the Electoral Bill amendment.
