The Lagos State government has vowed the investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a student of Dowen College, a private school located in the Lekii area of the State.

The 12-year-old student, Sylvester Oromoni, died from injuries he allegedly sustained from the beating by his colleagues that wanted him to join their secret cult group.

But the school management lied to the parents of the students by informing them that the boy had been taken to the hospital because of injuries he sustained while playing football.

In a statement issued on Friday by Ganiu Lawal, the spokesman of the State’s Ministry of Education, the government said it was already in touch with the parents of the student.

“The Lagos State Government sends its condolences to the parents of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni Jnr., a student of Dowen College, Lekki,” the Ministry said.

“The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, notes that this incident is shocking and the State is indeed sad about this great loss.

“A delegation comprising top-level management of relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies and the Police, has visited the school on a fact-finding mission.

“The State Government is in touch with the parents in this difficult time.

“We reassure the family of the late Sylvester Oromoni Junior and Lagosians at large that efforts are being made to unravel the circumstances leading to his demise, even as we reiterate the Government’s commitment to Child Protection,” it said.

Sylvester, who shares the same name as his father, was said to have mentioned the names of the boys that attacked him before he died.

There are unconfirmed stories that one of the boys mentioned by the late Sylvester has been flown out of the country by his family.
