Six bodies have been recovered by officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, from the Jos Correctional Facility, which was attacked late Sunday by bandits, a spokesman for the place has said.
This was disclosed on Monday by Geoffrey Longdiem, the Public Relations Officer of the command, who spoke to journalists in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
It was not quite clear yet, whether the bodies were those of the attackers or inmates of the correctional facility or those of officials of the place.
But officials of the facility have begun a headcount of the personnel and inmates with the aim of ascertaining who the bodies discovered there are.
“We are currently doing a headcount of the inmates. This exercise will enable us to know how many inmates have escaped,” Longdiem said.
The headcount will also help the officials establish the number of inmates who escaped from the facility during the attack.
Some inmates were able to escape during the attack but the Police in the state have arrested eight of them. The authorities have promised to intensify the search for the fleeing inmates.
The gunmen invaded the prison yard on Sunday evening but were resisted by the armed personnel of combined security agencies in the state following the quick response of the agencies.
A video showing the facility during the attack showed some armed personnel trying to put off fire caused by the attackers in one block of the facility.
The security officers could also be heard saying that the attackers had mixed up with the inmates in one part of the correctional facility.
