The drama taking place in Imo State House of Assembly continued on Monday with the impeachment of the Speaker, Paul Emeziem , by just six out of the 27 members of the House.

The group was led by the Deputy Speaker, Amara Iwuanyanwu, who herself was impeached last week.

The minority group elected another member, Kennedy Ibeh, as the new Speaker.

Ibeh, who represents Obowo state constituency, was one of the six lawmakers, who were suspended by Emeziem on July 8 for “unparliamentary conduct.”

He was first at the parliament in 2015 and was re-elected in 2019.

Before the impeachment of the Speaker took place, the House complex had been barricaded by security men who prevented the Assembly staff, lawmakers and their aides from gaining entering the place.

The session lasted for less than a quarter of an hour and ended with Ibeh assuming office as the Speaker.

Emeziem, who later got wind of the event, was said to have rushed to the House but was stopped from getting into the complex.

“Amara Iwuanyanwu can’t convene a plenary because he was properly impeached. If there should be any plenary, I am the one empowered by the law to call for it. Today is not our plenary day. Today is for our committee sittings not plenary. Amara Iwuanyanwu stands impeached,” the impeached  Speaker was said to have declared.
