Gunmen on Tuesday morning attacked the University of Abuja, and abducted two professors, two children of one of them, and two other persons.
The gunmen attacked the Senior Staff Quarters of the university located at the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The gunmen were said to have abducted six people in the attack, which was said to have taken place around 1 am on Tuesday.
Those taken away by the armed men were Prof. Bassey Ubom (whose son and daughter were also taken), Prof. Obanza Malam, Sambo Mohammed, and Dr. Tobit.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command, has confirmed the incident. A spokesman for the command, Josephine Adeh, said in a statement on Tuesday that the security agents were working on the case.
In a statement issued by the command, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday, announced the command had sent some teams to the main campus of the institution as well as its satellite campus.
According to the statement, ”Preliminary investigations however revealed that six (6) persons were allegedly abducted into the forest by the criminals on sighting the security operatives”.
Babaji said he had given instructions for police operatives to man the staff quarters and other affiliate formations of the university, and improve security around them.
Nigeria is currently experiencing a gale of kidnapping and other violent crimes by bands of armed gangs who roam the countryside and the highways, kidnapping for ransom.
