The management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation has announced the suspension of services on its Abuja-Kaduna route, following an attack on its train on the route.
Responding to the development, NRC said in a statement late Thursday that the explosion that occurred on the rail track affected the fuel tank of the locomotive on the last train of October 20th, 2021.
The statement said, “However, the situation has been brought under control by a relieved Locomotive that rescued the train to Rigasa Station, Kaduna State. The affected Locomotive has been sent to the workshop for assessment and repairs.
“We are also pleased to inform the public that there were no reported casualties or injuries to either the passengers or Train Crew.
“The NRC intends to resume trains services soonest after appropriate measures, checks and maintenance are carried out.
“The NRC Management apologizes for the inconveniences experienced last night and for the non-operation of train services currently being experienced as we work towards the restoration of normal services,” the Corporation said.
Reports about the attack on the train were first made by Shehu Sani, a former Senator from Kaduna State, who posted the report on his Twitter handle saying the attack took place on Wednesday night.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) terrorists attacked the Kaduna-Abuja railway with an explosive and opened fire on the train, targeting the engine driver and the tank,” he wrote.
“This (Thursday) morning, I was onboard when our train ran over another explosive damaged rail.”
