The National Executive Committee of the opposition People’s Democratic Party on Thursday approved the zoning of its chairmanship position to the Northern part of the country.

This decision was the high point of the 94th NEC meeting in Abuja, according to the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, in his briefing to journalists on the outcome of the NEC meeting.

Ologbondiyan said although there were discussions around the Governor Bala Mohammed-led committee, which looked into reasons why the party lost the 2019 elections and the question of zoning of the 2023 presidential ticket, the meeting opted for further discussions and decision to be shifted.

The decision to zone the post to the North is part of a political chase game being played by Nigeria’s two leading parties, the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Zoning the chairmanship of either party to the North means that the presidential candidate of that part will come from the South, and vice versa.

The recommendation was made by PDP’s zoning committee headed by  Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.
