News cases of COVID-19 infections have taken over nearly half of the available spaces in Lagos State, the Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, has said.

 

The state has a total of 410 bed capacity in its eight care centres, while 193 of the spaces have been occupied as at September 5.

 

“During the third wave of this pandemic, we have recorded about 199 COVID-19 related deaths in Lagos state,” he said.

 

The commissioner made the comment in a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday, as he gave an update on the COVID-19 in the state.

 

According to the commissioner, the eight care cenres in Lagos are: Infectious Disease Hospital 1, Yaba, Lagos University Teaching Hospital Armour, Paelon, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital,and Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta.

 

He said Lagos, which has so far accounted for the highest percentage of the pandemic infections in the country, was increasing the numbers of isolation centres available to treat the cases in this third wave.

 

Lagos, recorded 185 new COVID-19 infections on September 5, which raised the state’s total COVID-19 infections to 73,995.

 

The commissioner stated that the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted in the state since the pandemic began had risen to 700,999.

 

According to him, 73 percent of the tests were handed by private laboratories which are accredited by the state government, while 27 percent were done at the state public laboratories.

 

He further added that 4,883 COVID-19 patients who had been successfully treated and recovered were discharged from the state’s care centres.

 

“Total number of COVID-19 recovery in communities is 65, 128.

 

“Cases currently under isolation are 231, while active cases under home-based care are 3,180.”

 

Abayomi noted that the state recorded three new COVID-19 related fatalities, increasing the total deaths to 573.

 

Lagos State has a 10.6 percent average positivity rate and 0.77 percent fatality rate, he explained.
