…as Nigeria says no plans for imminent lockdown

Hajiya Hazida, wife of former President Late Shehu Shagari, died  on Thursday, aged 80 years, the family has announced.

This was announced by Shagari’s grandson, Bello Bala Shagari.

Bala announced that Hazida died of COVID-19 complications around 3:00 am on Thursday in Gwagwalada Isolation Centre.

This came as the Federal Government said total lockdown will be the last resort in its strategy to contain the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19.

Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire, made the declaration on Thursday at the weekly ministerial briefing by the Presidential Communication Team in Abuja, citing the examples of the impacts of lockdowns on the economy and people’s lives.

Ehanire said that nations have become wary of imposing total lockdowns which were in vogue at the start of the pandemic.

Instead of general lockdowns, Ehanire noted that administrators would make use of selective lockdowns targeted at areas under the threat.

According to the minister, Nigeria has paid for about 30 million doses of Johnson&Johnson vaccine, in addition to others sourced free.

He also revealed apart from the vaccines sourced free of charge, Nigeria has paid for

He added that since the prices of the one-shot vaccine have fallen, Nigeria would be able to buy about 40 million doses of the vaccines in all.

Ehanire said the 176,000 doses of the Johnson&Johnson doses have already been received while the rest will come in batches.
