At least 14 bandits were killed early Sunday morning as Police foiled an attack on a station in Benue State.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Kate Anene, confirmed the incident and explained that the attackers were on a mission to rescue suspected bandits who were arrested on Saturday and detained at Katsina-Ala Divisional Police Station for investigations.
On Sunday morning, around 1 am, some gunmen, numbering about 50, launched an attack on the station in an attempt to free the suspects from custody, the spokesman said.
However, operatives at the Division, who were already on alert, engaged the gunmen, killing at least 14 of them in the ensuing exchange of gunfire, while others escaped with bullets wounds.
Killing of policemen and other security agents has become rampant southeastern and South-South regions, as the country witnesses its worst peace-time security challenge.
