…soldiers block Niger Bridge head

A detachment of soldiers on Saturday blocked the Onitsha Bridgehead  that connects the Southeast with Asaba in Delta State, over alleged killing of their colleagues.

At least five soldiers were said to have died in a military checkpoint attack on Saturday by unidentified gunmen.

The attack was said to have taken place at Ihiala along the Onitsha -Owerri Road late on Friday night.

The attack created tension in Anambra, as soldiers blocked roads in the state.

The soldiers were said to have arrived at the Bridge Head as early as 5:30 am following the news of the killing of their colleagues.

The gunmen were said to have fired at the soldiers, destroying their operational Hilux van parked at the checkpoint.

There has been a surge in attacks on military personnel and facilities in the Southeast and South-South regions of the country. While no known groups have claimed responsibility for the attacks, the government has always figured the Indigenous People of Biafra and its military wing, the Eastern Security Network, for the attacks.

The blockade of the roads in Anambra led to challenges for travellers to and the state.
