Gunmen on Saturday killed five policemen and a woman during an early morning attack at the Divisional Police headquarters, Odoro Ikpe in Ini local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

When the identities of the attackers were not immediately known, the Chairman of the council, Mr. Israel Adaisin, pointed accusing fingers at  members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Members of the ESN, which is the militant wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra, have carried out similar attacks on police and Army personnel, with a number of casualties recorded.

The Akwa Ibom attack came on the heels of similar ones in Rivers State, where at least seven police officers were gunned down by unidentified gunmen, at a police station and police checkpoint.

Adaisin said the gunmen invaded the police facility at about 2:45 am and killed five police officers. They also killed one woman, burnt several vehicles, and destroyed other facilities.

Witnesses said the gunmen, who numbered more than 40, arrived at the council headquarters in two buses and a car.
