Gunmen who kidnapped about 23 students of privately owned Greenfield University Students in Kaduna have demanded the sum of N800m ransom for their release.
The gunmen stormed the school on Tuesday night and took away the students and a matron, while a porter was killed in the operation.
Located in Kasarami, in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State Greenfield is the only private university in the state.
The gunmen made the demand through contacts with relations of the kidnapped students, sources said.
Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the attack and identified the porter who was killed in the attack as Mr. Paul Ude Okafor.
“After search-and-rescue operations, a staff member of the university, Paul Ude Okafor, was confirmed to have been killed by the bandits, while a number of students were kidnapped,” Aruwan said in a statement titled “Bandits attack Greenfield University; one varsity staff member killed”.
Nigeria is going through its worst peace-time insecurity crisis, as groups of kidnappers and bandits roam the countryside, towns, and highways carting people away into the forests from where they make demands for ransom.
