The social messaging and networking platform, Twitter, has said that it chose Ghana over Nigeria as its Africa office because of the former’s democratic ideals.
According to Twitter, Ghana’s “support for free speech and online freedoms” made the country its candidate of choice as its operational base in Africa.
The choice of Ghana as the host of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) also added to Twitter’s decision to cite its Africa office, the company added.
The explanations came as Nigerians reacted negatively to the news of Twitter’s choice of Ghana over Nigeria.
Despite its preference for Ghana over Nigeria on office, Twitter has admitted that Nigeria remains its target market.
“Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana,” Kayvon Beykpour and Uche Adegbite, Twitter’s Product Lead, and Director, Product Management, Global Markets, respectively, said in a tweet.
Twitter has also announced that its new team members would in the meantime work remotely, in line with its work-from-home policies while it explores “the opportunity to open an office in Ghana in the future”.
