Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, has ordered investigations into the attack and attempt on the life of Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue on Saturday.

Mr. Frank Mba, a Commissioner of Police and the Force Public Relations Officer, announced this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Orton was attacked on Saturday at his farm at the outskirts of Makurdi, the State Capital. The governor later announced he had to run about 1.5 km to escape the gunfire attack on him carried out by 15 herdsmen.

Mba said that Mr. Adamu condemned the attack and directed the Commissioner of Police in Benue to strengthen and improve security in the state, particularly around the Governor.

He said that the I-G had also directed the CP to carry out painstaking investigations into the incident and ensure the arrest and prosecution of persons indicted in the course of the investigations.

Adamu also ordered the immediate deployment of a team of specialised investigators from the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID, to ensure a speedy, thorough, and conclusive investigations into the matter, Mba said.

The deployment was to provide additional investigative support to the Police Command in Benue, he added.
