Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Saturday morning escaped death after hi convoy came under attack by armed herders
The attack occurred at Tyo-Mu community in the outskirts of Makurdi, the state capital, along Makurdi-Gboko road.
Ortom was said to be on his way to Makurdi when the gunmen opened fire on his convoy, but the attackers were repelled by his security men.
The Benue governor has been one of the outspoken critics of the current attacks being visited on Nigerians by herdsmen. The bandits, who sometimes double as herdsmen, have turned Nigeria’s highways, farmland, villages, and cities into arenas for kidnapping, rape, murder, and other violent crimes.
Ortom has also criticized the Federal Government’s handling of the crisis, which has led to the death of several thousands of Nigerians. He has also suggested that all Nigerian adults deemed to be the same should be allowed to carry the AK-47 rifle that the bandits use to attack Nigerians.
