A convoy of the 73-year-old Emir of Birnin Gwari, Alhaji Zubairu Jibril Mai Gwari II, was attacked by some bandits along the dreaded Kaduna-Birnin Gwari Highway.
The State Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan confirmed the incident in a statement, saying that, the incident happened at about 4:30 pm on Tuesday.
The commissioner said only the driver, Umar Jibrin, and an orderly, Inspector Sani Yahaya, were in the vehicle, on their way to Kaduna.
No life was lost during the attack, while the Emir was said not to be in Kaduna as of the time of the attack.
The attackers riddled the Emir’s car with bullets.
He explained that the bandits who appeared in front of the vehicles placed tree leaves on the road all in the bid to force the vehicles to a halt but to no avail.
Aruwan said that apart from the minor injuries sustained by the driver as a result of shattered glasses from gunshots, nobody was hurt in the attack.
“Efforts to arrest other members of the gang are ongoing,” Aruwan said.
“Governor Nasir El-Rufai received the reports with thanks and extended his sympathy to the Emir of Birnin Gwari over the attack on his vehicle. He also sent condolences to the families of those killed by bandits and prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls.
“Furthermore, the Governor commended troops and personnel for the successful arrests of suspects and gun runners, as well as the engagement of bandits in clearance operations,” Aruwan said.
