The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has calmed the nerves of mobile-phone subscribers, saying that fears of mass disconnection of telephone lines over currently being entertained over the National Identity Numbers (NIN) registration were unfounded.

NCC explained that the ongoing integration of SIM registration records of subscribers with the NIN was targeted at raising general safety and also helping the government to plan for national development.

Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, explained in a statement that the clarification became necessary because many subscribers had become worried that their lines might be disconnected over NIN registration.

NCC had to “issue this clarification in order to allay the fears of subscribers and the general public,” Adinde said.

He asked the public to ignore speculations of mass disconnection currently being circulated in some sections of the media.

According to him, the publications “are based on the erroneous assumption that for every network or SIM connection, there is one unique human subscriber”.
