The Lagos State has shifted the reopening of schools on concerns over the resurgence of Covid-19 pandemic in the country, according to a pronouncement by the government on Sunday.
It said that public and private primary and secondary schools in the state would not reopen on Monday, January 4, 2021, as earlier announced.
While prodded on whether the schools would reopen as earlier announced by noted that recent developments concerning the second wave of the pandemic would not allow that.
“Please, recall that the Ministry of Education earlier announced 4th of January as resumption date for the second term 2020/2021 academic session, but this has since been overtaken by the turn of events due to the recent waves of Covid-19 pandemic,” Kayode Abayomi, spokesman for the Ministry of Education, said.
“As a result of the spike in Coronavirus pandemic, Mr. Governor announced the indefinite closure of all schools. To this end, kindly be informed that a new date of resumption will be announced as soon as possible”, Abayomi explained.
Nigeria is currently witnessing a resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic, with daily cases of infection rising above the 1,000 mark on a number of days.
Responding to the spike, the Federal Government ordered the closure of schools till January 18, to enable the authorities assess the trend of the new infections.
