Nigeria’s Air Force jets have killed many insurgents in a series of airstrikes on the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, the military said Tuesday.
According to the Defence headquarters, the air interdiction missions carried out by the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole have continued to deal decisive blows on the terrorist elements in the North-East of the country.
Maj. Gen. John Enenche, DHQ spokesman said in a statement that the NAF jets bombed “the ‘S’ region in the heart of the Sambisa Forest” on Monday.
“The airstrike, which was executed employing a force package of Nigerian Air Force fighter jets, was carried out after series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions revealed that the terrorists responsible for recent attacks in the Southern part of Borno and Northern part of Adamawa State had originated from the location,” Enenche said in the statement, titled, ‘Air Task Force destroys hideout, neutralizes several terrorists at Sambisa Forest, Borno State’.
“Accordingly, the NAF attack aircraft engaged the target area in successive passes, leading to the destruction of some of their structures and logistics stores, including a suspected anti-aircraft gun station as the terrorists fired at the NAF aircraft,” the statement added.
“Several insurgents were also neutralised in the process.”
A 53-second footage showed the aircraft dropping bombs on the target location, it said.
Nigeria is currently battling a rising wave of insurgency in the North East, kidnapping, banditry and other forms of violent attacks across the country.
