The Chairman of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which upheld President Muhammadu Buhari’s election last year, Justice Mohammed L. Garba, is among our Justices recommended to the President for appointment into the Supreme Court.

Another member of the Tribunal, Justice Abdu Aboki (North-West Zone), was also elevated to the Supreme Court.

Two other Justices recommended to the apex court are Justices Tijjani Abubakar and Mohammed Saulawa.

Mr Soji Oye, Director of Information of the National Judicial Council, disclosed on Friday in a statement that Justice Abubakar represented the North-East Zone on Supreme Court, while  Justices Garba, Aboki and Saulawa are to represent North-West.

Oye said that the current 12 Justices, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, consisted of two Justices from North Central, one from the North-East, one from North-West, three from South-East, one from the South-South and three from the South-West.

The number of Justices on the Supreme Court has been declining in the last two years. Despite this, President Buhari failed to  treat a list of four Justices made up of Justices Adamu Jauro, Emmanuel Agim, Sam Oseji, and Helen Ogunwumiju, recommended to him for appointment to court last year.

The NJC also recommended 18 others for appointment as judges of other courts, Oye added.

They are Justice Gumna Kashim Kaigama, recommended for appointment as the Chief Judge of Yobe State; Kadi Muhammed Abubakar (recommended for appointment as Grand Kadi of Sharia Court of Appeal, Katsina State) and Justice Mathew Emeka Njoku (as the President, Customary Court of Appeal, Imo State.

The NJC also recommended the appointment of six lawyers as judges of the High Court of Kano State. The lawyers are Jamilu Shehu Suleiman, Maryam Ahmen Sabo, Sanusi Ado Ma’aji, Abdu Maiwada Abubakar, Zuwaira Yusuf and. Hafsat Yahaya Sani.

The NJC recommended the appointment of Clara Jummai Kataps and Kazera Blessing Kodiya, as judges of the High Court of Taraba State.
