Nigeria’s House of Representatives on Friday summoned Godswill Akpabio, minister of Niger Delta Affairs, to appear before its Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission.

Akpabio, a former member of the Senate has featured prominently in allegations of fraud and other wrongdoings in the affairs of the commission, which is under the supervision of his ministry.

Friday’s summons followed the testimony by Joy Nunieh, former acting managing director of the commission, before the Committee. Nunieh has alleged that Akpabio tried to sexually molest her and also tried to induce her to commit fraud at the commission. She testified virtually.

Armed Policemen on Thursday invaded Nunieh’s residence in Port Harcourt and tried to abduct her, but she was rescued by Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers State. Nunieh alleged that Akpabio was behind the attack on her because he did not want her to testify.

The National Assembly is currently investigating the conduct of affairs of the commission, which was established to foster the development of the Niger Delta region, which produces the country’s oil but was left underdeveloped for decades.
