A former executive director of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency was on Wednesday jailed seven years in Lagos for corruption.

Captain Ezekiel Agaba was found guilty of N1.5b fraud by a Federal High Court in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission brought the case against Agaba.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Ibrahim Buba argued the Commission proved the charges against Agaba beyond reasonable doubts.

He convicted Agaba of the seven counts of conversion and criminal breach of trust filed against him by the EFCC, and sentenced him seven years on each of the counts. The counts are to run concurrently.

The case began in December 2015, when the EFCC arraigned Agaba together with  Patrick Akpolobokemi a former Director-General of NIMASA, and Ekene Nwakuche and Juan Amechee Governor, for laundering the sum of N2.6bn meant for the implementation of International Ship and Port Security code at NIMASA.

A Court of Appeal discharged Akpobolokemi and subsequently, the EFCC withdrew the charges against Nwakuche and Governor, leaving only Agaba.
