The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has said that the impeachment threat against President Muhammadu Buhari through his vice and Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is real and should not be ignored.
The Executive Director of the centre Dr. Ibrahim Zikirullahi in a statement Sunday said that the federal lawmakers’ threat is dangerous and threatens the nation’s democracy.
“The recent provocative outbursts from the National Assembly, specifically, the threat by the Senate to impeach Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for declining to relieve Mr. Ibrahim Magu of his duties as the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is not one to be treated with kid gloves. It is apparent that entrenched corrupt interests are the sponsors of the threat.
“Those dubiously promoting the idea of an Acting Presidency with Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the helm, are merely testing the waters. The plotters are trying to assess the public mood before implementing their treasonable plans. CHRICED warns that there is a clear and present danger to the entire Nigerian polity, as a result of the antics of this desperate clique in the National Assembly, which is beginning to fancy its chance to grab power, taking advantage of the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari,” Zikirullahi said.
According to him the threat coming few weeks after a coup scare that generated anxiety across the nation, is not one to be dismissed with a wave of the hand as it shows is that the plot for a legislative power grab by Saraki and his scheming co-travelers in the Senate is underway.
While warning that the desperation of the plotters notwithstanding, there would be severe backlash from the Nigerians should those making the threats act on their intention.
He therefore urged the Acting President not to dismiss the development in the interest of national security, and for Nigerians to stand with President Buhari to thwart the scheming of those planning to grab power through the back door.
He said, “CHRICED admonishes Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, to assert his powers as conferred by the Constitution by decisively deal with any threat to national security and the constitutional order. The Acting President should understand by now that the arrow-heads of these threats do not believe in democracy; they are only interested in naked power, which they have always used, not in the service of the Nigerian people, but for their own personal aggrandizement
