The Controller General, Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Ja’afaru Ahmed has disclosed that the process leading to the promotion of more personnel in the year 2017 has been initiated.

Ahmed made the disclosure while speaking at the decoration ceremony of the 18 newly promoted Assistant Controllers of Prisons at the Service Headquarters in Abuja.

“It is gladdening to note that the issue of stagnation in the Nigeria Prisons Service is no longer the case,” he said.

“As vacancy will allow, the board has already called for the 2017 promotion interview.”

CGP Ahmed said after a long period of stagnation witnessed by the Service over the years, the NPS under his leadership had successfully promoted over 11000 personnel to their next ranks.

He noted that most of the newly promoted ACGs have stayed in their former position for more than seven years.

Addressing the ACGs, the Prisons boss said:

“Now that you have been promoted, the service expect nothing than your dedication, your service and your wisdom and courage so that the core mandate of the Service of secure custody, producing inmates as when due, identifying the causes of their anti-social behaviours, setting in motions mechanism for their reformation and subsequent rehabilitation and integration back to the society and also ensuring that our food needs in the prison service are met.”

He said they must also work towards ensuring that the Prison farms were not only for revenue generation but must also meet the food needs of the inmates.

Responding on behalf of the promoted senior officers, ACG Ekijere Akin thanked the federal government for the elevation, promising to justify their new rank through hardwork and dedication.
