The Senate at plenary on Thursday turned down the nomination of Saidu Abubakar, a nominee for the board of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).
Before now, Abubakar had once moved for the scrapping of the Nigerian Senate in a protest which probably led to his being hated by the legislators.
A member of the Senate Committee on Communications asked Abubakar why he was appearing in a Senate he wanted scrapped.
In response, Saidu said, he wanted it scrapped because the cost of maintaining the upper Chamber is on the high side.
He pinpointed unnecessary expenses of the Senate such as; wardrobe allowances, sitting allowances amidst other expenditures as colossal waste of Nigeria’s resources.
Abubakar was confident to confront the committee that he didn’t regret saying what he said concerning scrapping the Senate. In his words, “the senate is an avenue for wastage of scarce resources of the country”.
While presenting reports of the screening to the Senate today, chairman of the committee, Gilbert Nnaji, asserted that Abubakar is not qualified to be a governing board member of the NCC because the highest qualification he has, is diploma in computer science.
Another nominee, Yissa Ezekiel, was also rejected for also having the same qualification as that of Abubakar.
The Senate however ratified the appointment of five other nominees of the seven names submitted to them.
Those aproved for appointment by the Senate are; Olabiyi Durojaiye as (Chairman), Sunday Dare as (Executive commissioner), Clement Omeiza (Commissioner) Okoi Ofem Obono (Commissioner) and Ifeanyi Ararume (Commissioner).
