First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs Aisha Buhari is in the United States, contrary to claim by Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose that she cannot travel to the US and that she should prove her innocence in the Halliburton scandal by travelling to the US.
The governor severally claimed that the Nigerian first lady was involvement in the Halliburton scandal and insisted that she was the person allegedly indicted by a US Court for transferring $170,000 to indicted US Congressman, Williams Jefferson. And if she claims to be innocent she should travel to the US.
it was reported that Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC affirmed that Mrs Buhari arrived on a British Airways flight from London on Wednesday night on a week visit and is plated to attend a number of occasions in the US.
As much as Mrs Buhari has denied her involvement in the US scandal, the Ekiti State strongly insisted that she was indeed, the ‘Aisha Buhari’ that was actually mentioned in the Halliburton scandal.
Nigerian First Lady is billed to attend meetings at the George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and will also be hosted by the United States Institute of Peace, in collaboration with Voice of America, as well as attend the 25th anniversary celebration of Zumunta Association USA Inc. during her visit.
Counsel to the president’s wife, Mary Ekpere-Eta of Mary Ekpere & Co, Legal Practitioners had written a letter dated June 22, 2016, to Governor Fayose, demanding a retraction of the governor’s statement that the president’s wife was involved in the Halliburton scandal, threatening legal action if Fayose fails to retract within five days.
However a letter dated 8th July 2016, Mike Ozekhome, Fayose’s counsel confirmed that the statement made regarding the involvement of Mrs. Buhari in the Halliburton scandal was “correct and justified in law, having regards to a court judgment convicting one Mr William Jefferson for bribery in the Halliburton case.”
On 20th July, Aisha finally filed a suit against Governor Fayose for claiming she was involved in the Halliburton scandal.
