The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu has been invited to appear before Senate over the unbundling of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The senate said the minister was invited to appear before the Senate Joint committees on Petroleum Resources (Upstream, Downstream and Gas), to explain the Federal Government’s action.
According to the invitation letter, signed by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Tayo Alasoadura on Wednesday evening, the senate was shocked at the news of unbundling the NNPC.
“Shocked by the announcement in disbelief, three committees overseeing the industry wish to invite the Minister to appear before them to brief them of this critical decision in a meeting schedule Thursday,” the letter read.
The senate noted that the action was taken “without recourse to the Act establishing the NNPC and approval by the Senate of Nigeria.”
Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, also told journalists in Abuja that the announcement of the unbundling of the corporation had generated issues that the senate was looking into.
“We will call the leadership of the NNPC to brief us about what is happening. The announcement has generated issues that the Senate is very much interested in,” Ndume said.
“At the end of the day we will see exactly what happened.”
