The perpetrators of the killings in Agatu Local Government, Benue State have continued the slaughter despite the directive issued by President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Muhammadu Buhari had directed that a panel of Investigation be set up to look into the incessant clashes that have been occurring between Fulani herdsmen and farmers.

He had also directed that an inter-agency security team should be established to forestall further attacks.

But on Monday, eyewitnesses confirm that the bloodbath is continuing unabated.

A survivor of the most recent clash described it as one of the worst ever massacre ever witnessed in the series of attacks by the herdsmen.

The number of casualty is high but can’t be ascertained now, the survivor said.

“The news of Federal and Benue State governments’ intervention made the villagers relax and many of those who had earlier fled Odugbeho returned to the village on Sunday,” the survivor said, explaining why the casualty figure looks higher than ever before.

“As we speak, Odigbeho-Agatu has been razed. The massacre there today (Monday) had no equal because Odigbeho is one of the most important and well-populated villages in Agatu. Our people were caught napping because we relaxed when we heard what we considered the cheering news that the federal government has intervened.

He said his village is littered with corpse currently and he has been trying in vain to reach his family.

“We feel terribly let down by the government that announced a joint security team,” he said.

He said no security team has been seen since the president’s intervention.
