First term lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly are to be given a car each by the state government which has secured the approval of N352,973,986 from the state House of Assembly for the purpose.
The approval for the amount was unanimously passed with a voice vote after the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, called for the support of the members of the House concerning the demand.
The executive arm of the government sought the approval through a letter to the House on Monday signed by the state Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade.
The executive arm said in the letter read by the Clerk of the House, Ganiyu Abiru, that the recourse to the House was in obedience to the 2015 appropriation law which directs that any expenditure above N200 million from the special expenditure fund must be approved by the House.
“I wish to request the approval for the utilisation of special expenditure fund to the sum of N352, 973, 986.
“The funds are to be used for the purchase of official vehicles and other accessories for the 20 first-term honourable members of the eighth Assembly.”
Many of the lawmakers supported the approval in their comments and contributions with Hon. Rotimi Olowo representing Somolu Constituency I, stressing that such approval would help the new members of the Assembly to enjoy the benefits of the office they occupy.
