The Group Chief Executive Officer of the South Africa-owned MTN, Sifiso Dabengwa, has been fired.

His sack was announced on Monday and he would now be replaced by non-executive chairman Phuthuma Nhleko for a maximum of six months before a substantive head is appointed.

Dabengwa, who has been chief executive of MTN since 2011, is believed to have been forced to resign as Group CEO of the African biggest mobile phone company.

His sack, according to the telecoms company’s statement, is related to the recent fine of N1.04 trillion imposed on it by the government of Nigeria for the firm’s refusal to obey extant policies of Nigeria.

MTN however said it is still in talks with the Nigerian government over the fine that was imposed because the telecoms regulator failed to cut off users with unregistered SIM cards in Nigeria.
