Mrs. Toyin Saraki, wife of Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday stormed the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja with a huge crowd of supporters.
The crowd of supporters also had five Senators including Senators Dino Melaye, Peter Nwaobosi, Abdul Abubakar, Binta Mashin and Isa Misau, and 20 members of the House of Representatives.
Mrs. Saraki was held for six hours during which he was questioned on the allegations against her by the anti-graft agency.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State had said it wrote the petition to the EFCC against Toyin Saraki. Members of the party later denied this claiming that their signature was forged after reportedly being pressured to drop the petition.
Saraki got to the EFCC headquarters at 12:36pm. She was released at 6:15pm.
The crowd remained at the entrance of the headquarters for the six hours the officials grilled the former Kwara First Lady.
When she was allowed to go, Mrs. Saraki evaded journalists at the main entrance.
She later sent a statement through Wellbeing Foundation, her organisation, concerning her appearance at the EFCC.
In the statement , she said she visited the EFCC as a citizen with the utmost respect for highest standards of transparency and democratic accountability.
“Mrs. Saraki made herself available to assist the commission wholeheartedly with any lawful enquiry they may have.
“Following today’s (Tuesday) visit, Mrs. Saraki will continue to cooperate fully with the EFCC, and hopes for a prompt and positive resolution in satisfaction of this enquiry.
“Having placed an emphasis on the importance of accountability, transparency and diligent reporting, Mrs Saraki maintains that she has always operated within the law and to the highest standards of global compliance in all of her activities,” the statement said.
