Unable to contain the level of criticisms from members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and calls for his resignation over the massive defeat suffered by the party in the 2015 elections, the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, on Wednesday finally tendered his resignation.
Details of the resignation had not been known at the time of filing this report, but sources at the party’s national headquarters confirmed the development to Huhuonline.com few minutes ago.
According to the sources, Mu’azu thinks he does not need to continue to remain in the position as the party seems to be crumbling faster than expected and members are up against him and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Abdullahi Jalo, also confirmed Mu’azu’s resignation to journalists in Abuja.
A letter from Mu’azu to the party was received by officials of the party on Wednesday.
“The details have not been made public but I know the chairman could no longer bottle the insults on him as if he was solely responsible for the loss of the party in the elections.
“Several other people were responsible for the defeat we suffered at the elections and instead of coming together to salvage what remains of the party, they have continued to point fingers at each other,” one of the source, who sounded angry, told our correspondent.
Some members of the party including Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti and even Femi Fani-Kayode, the spokesman of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation had continued to call for Mu’azu’s resignation with Fani-Kayode insisting that his resignation would assist the party to resolve its challenges.
A member of the party, Adeyanju Deji, also confirmed the resignation, saying that though Mu’azu denied planning to resign Tuesday night when they spoke, he could not confirm that the chairman had resigned.
National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, also confirmed the resignation to journalists at the party`s secretariat.”I can confirm that we have received the resignation of the National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.
“I can confirm that the chairman, who had health challenges, stayed on for the primaries, for the campaigns and the elections and after consultations with his family, and in his personal interest, he had decided to resign.
“This party commends him for his services to the party and for his love for the nation. We wish him well. We will not forget him.
“In line with the constitution, the Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, has taken charge of the affairs of the party as acting national chairman of the party. The constitution does not recognise a vacuum.”
