Senate President David Mark is one of the chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who is currently burdened by the direction the party has taken.
He said on Wednesday that with the level of accusations and counter-accusations in the aftermath of the general elections in which the party performed very poorly, the party was jetting into extinction.
Mark said this when he hosted the committee, led by Senator Ike Ekweremadu, set up to review the elections and recommend ways to re-invigorate the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Receiving the committee members in his office at the National Assembly, Mark said the continued slamming, quarrels and infighting in the party are signs that if nothing urgent was done, PDP would soon disappear.
According to him, the PDP is already hemorrhaging.
“Unless we halt the bleeding and finds the necessary therapy, we may be heading for the final burial of the party,” Mark said.
“The party is already in a comatose status and we should do all we can to resuscitate the party rather than this unnecessary rancour and bulk passing.”
He said the emerging factions within the party are absolutely unnecessary urging the combatants to sheath their swords and embrace dialogue.
Mark added: “My appeal is that we should not do anything further that would damage the already fragmented house.
“Everybody should come together and rebuild the party. We have gotten enough bruises. We need not inflict further pains on ourselves, with continuous bickering.”
He said the blame game was enough, begging members of the party to return to the drawing board and stop disgracing themselves before the world.
He expressed belief that a useful lesson has been learnt from the PDP electoral misfortune.
“As for me, it is time to put on our thinking caps and chart a new course,” Mark said.
“I have worked closely with the Deputy President of the Senate over the years and I know his capability and capacity to handle issues.”
He also urged the committee to do its work without fear or favour.
Appealing to all aggrieved party members to come together to salvage the party, Mark said the new status of the party as an opposition is a challenge which must be faced with honesty, sincerity of purpose and dedication to duty.
Ekweremadu promised that the committee would do its best.
