When he becomes President on 29th May, General Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s President-elect, says he would probe the allegation of missing $20 billion by former Governor of Central Bank, now Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II.
The missing fund has continued to generate controversies, especially because of the way the Federal Government handled the issue and fired Sanusi instead.
The government later engaged a firm to investigate the allegation the report of which recommended that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) should refund $1.4 billion to the Federation Account.
While receiving a delegation of supporters and newly elected officials of his All Progressives Party (APC) from Adamawa State on Sunday at his campaign office in Abuja, Buhari, who spoke in Hausa, said it was lamentable that the government handled the allegation with levity and instead turned the whistle-blower to the victim.
He promised that his administration would take a critical look at Sanusi’s allegation since there were documents about it.
On the issue of corruption, Buhari said he heard that some Nigerians were already returning funds they looted.
He however said he does not believe this yet until he sees for himself.
