Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has summoned Lulu Mnguni, the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, in protest against the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreigners.
The government also asked the South African authorities to compensate all the victims of the attacks on non-nationals of the country.
The summon was made public through a statement by the Public Communications Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Musiliu Obanikoro, who represented the federal government at the meeting expressed concern over the fate of Nigerians and other nationals, who are migrant workers in the country.
Obanikoro emphasised that since South Africa was a major player in the continent, the country should ensure that non-nationals living withing it’s shores are allowed to stay peacefully.
“Pleas take concrete steps to quell the unrest and bring the culprits involved to book, to serve as a deterrent to others and prevent recurrence,” Obanikoro said.
Responding, Mnguni said his country is currently doing everything possible to address the attacks and prosecute those behind it.
He thanked Nigerian authorities for the mature way in which they are handling the crisis.
