For more than six hours, air travellers in different parts of Nigeria were delayed on Thursday due to the strike action embarked upon by of the Air Traffic Controllers in the country.
The strike was due to a long-drawn crisis between the controllers and their management around the country, a source told huhuonline.com.
“The strike underscores our demand for the payment of monies meant to be paid by management of the Air Traffic Controllers since last year,” the source who pleaded for anonymity said.
“The monies have not been paid despite several pleas and threats. So we want to use this opportunity to let everyone know and if possible knock out the management.
“The strike is to force our management to pay and to also make the government aware of what is happening in our organisation.”
The source confirmed that the action was throughout the country. However he said international flights were not disturbed.
“The strike is not against the Federal Government but is as a result of an internal issue between the controllers and the management,” the source clarified.
The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) have officially kept mum on the strike.
ATSSSAN president, Benjamin Okewu, also did not welcome any phone discussion on the matter.
The managements of of the Air Traffic controllers are also yet to react to the action as at the time of this report.
