National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, has expressed concern over the spate of defection to his party by politicians especially those formerly with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Many big politicians across the country have been rushing into the APC since the party’s presidential flag bearer, Muhammadu Buhari won the 28th March presidential election in the country even when the PDP raised alarm over the practice and called them moles.

Oyegun, who voted in his Ward 2, Unit 1 Polling Unit, Oredo East, Benin City, said rather than looking for where the land seemed to be greener, such politicians could come together and form a new opposition. He said such level of defection was not too good for Nigeria’s politics and democracy. According to him, a formidable opposition is what the country’s democracy needed.

“Many opposition party members have defected to APC just because they lost out, that is not good for political development,” Oyegun said. “One would have advised that opposition members should stay where they are, and form a formidable opposition party.” Asked to assess the election in Edo, he said the exercise had been the most peaceful and most decent ever conducted in the state. The election in Edo state only concerns the State House of Assembly as Governor Adams Oshiomhole is yet to end his second term in office.
