The rank of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State swelled on Thursday as Prince Fred Eke Idika, the running mate of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming election in the state defected to the PDP.
Idika said about 20,000 members of APC who are his staunch supporters have also left with him to PDP.
The defection took place at the PDP women’s wing presidential rally in Umuahia, the state capital.
Idika told the crowd that he decided to leave his party to the PDP because the latter had done well and he would have the opportunity to contribute to the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.
While pledging his support for Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, the PDP governorship candidate in the election in the Abia State, he said Ikpeazu was the best among the candidates in the state to help develop the state.
At the time of this report, the APC had not reacted to the defection. Calls to the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, were not picked.
