Members of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign team who were trapped in Maiduguri, Borno State capital on Sunday have found their way back to Abuja on Monday.
The team which went in advance to prepare the campaign logistics, was made up of representatives of the media, medical and security units of the Presidential Villa.
The team was caught up in the altercation resulting from Boko Haram’s attempt to capture Maiduguri and the resistance effort on Sunday morning.
It was gathered that, the campaign team had to be relocated from their hotel to the state headquarters of the Department of State Security (DSS) for safety.
One of the team members told journalists that the delegation decided to leave Maiduguri early on Monday after everything seems to have come back to the normal.
The witness said everyone was enveloped with, even with the heavy presence of security operatives.
He recounted that bodies burnt beyond recognition littered the path as the team members made their way out of the city.
“When we passed the danger spots and three roads that lead to Sambisa Forest. We saw corpses littering the road. We also saw burnt and bombed houses,” the eyewitness recounted.
“We also saw battle-ready soldiers with Armoured Personnel Carriers. We learnt that there was another serious battle overnight.”
Another witness said he was traumatised by the gore he witnessed in the city,
“You cannot imagine what was going on in my mind at the time,” he said.
“It is better read about than witnessed. May God come to our rescue fast.”
Security operatives reported that more than nine soldiers and 56 insurgents were killed in the manoeuvre.
