Barely 24 four hours after President Goodluck Jonathan visited Maiduguri, Borno State for campaign ahead of the February 14 presidential election, members of the Boko Haram have attacked the city and another major town, Monguno resulting in a curfew imposed on the city.
Witnesses in the state said one of the attacks occurred at Jimtilo area of the city, adding that at that period, officers of the Nigeria military had teamed up and were moving armoured tanks to the area to engage the Boko Haram fighters.
Many residents of the affected areas are currently moving en-masse to escape the attacks.
The Nigerian military confirmed the attacks in its tweet announcing that its troops were repelling Boko Haram fighters in fierce battles in the two towns of Maiduguri and Monguno.
“Troops are repelling a simultaneous attack on Monguno and Maiduguri by terrorists,” the defence headquarters said, later announcing that the troops had successfully quelled the attack on Maiduguri and announced a curfew for the affected areas.
