1John 5:14-15…And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
Notice that our text says…”if we ask any thing according to his will”… some have translated his will to mean his words. But it is more than that. Thelema is the Greek word translated will, it signifies what God wishes or has determined shall be done. It speaks of his purpose, inclination or design.
In other to appreciate this, we must first understand that God works with man based on covenant. He relates with man based on the tenet of his covenant for a particular dispensation.
In case you are wondering what dispensation is, a dispensation is an administration, a system or a management.
In theology, it is simply the divine administration of a period of time. Otherwise stated, it is the kitchen rule that God uses to order the affairs of the world for a particular time.
So when you understand his “thelema,” his plan, purpose or design, you can approach him with boldness of speech, there will be freedom in your speaking, you will have a free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage, boldness and assurance.
I John 3:8 … For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil..
In other words… “The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done].”
Sin, sickness and poverty are the works of the devil. Jesus came to undo what the devil has done. Jesus came with the express purpose of liquidating the devil’s activities. He entered the scene to abolish the Devil’s ways. Jesus has put to an end the devils ways.
Your job is to maintain the victory that Jesus won. Your wrestling is not to try to defeat the devil, he is already defeated. Your responsibility is sustain the victory.
So if you understand that the finished works of Jesus has made you rich, healthy and provided forgiveness of your sins (past, present and future), there won’t be any ambiguity in your dialogues with God.
You will go to him with boldness and receive everything that is already yours. You will have a free and fearless confidence and will not live in condemnation and run away from God or the church just like Adam did when he transgressed against God… I heard your voice— I was afraid— and I hid. Genesis 3:10
When a building is condemned by the city, it means it not fit for use, right? Condemnation makes you feel; you are not fit for God to use you.
But you must understand that your right standing with God is not based on what you did, but on what Jesus did.
Romans 5:19…For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Notice you did not become a sinner because of what you did; you became a sinner because of what Adam did… “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners”
When you were not born gain, no good deed of yours, could get you out of this unregenerate state.
Similarly, you did not become righteous because of what you did; you became righteous because of what Jesus did…so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. No bad deed of yours can alter your righteousness. What you do cannot alter or change your righteousness.
Your failures cannot change your righteousness. Sin cannot alter your righteousness because all your sins(past, present and future) were charged to the account of Jesus.(2 Corinthian 5:19)
