Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Joseph Mbu, who became controversial following the way he battled Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and almost grounded governance in the state, has been redeployed to oversee Lagos and Ogun.
Before his redeployment, Mbu was overseeing Abuja.
The AIG was one of the few AIGS redeployed on Tuesday. Many others retained their positions and postings.
With the redeployment, Mbu now takes over from Umar Manko, who now holds a posting at the Director of Study Group, NIPSS, Kuru, Jos, Plateau State.
A statement by Emmanuel Ojukwu, Force Public Relations Officer states that the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, charged the AIGs to be more service-oriented in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
The police said the redeployment was as a result of its ongoing reorganisation as well as as to fill some positions left vacant by retirement adding that their redeployment is with immediate effect.
However, Huhuonline.com learnt that there has been grumbling in Lagos following Mbu’s redeployment which many see as connected with the forth-coming elections.
“Looking at Mbu’s antecedents, we are not comfortable. We believe the presidency has sent him here to help prosecute the elections in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos told Huhuonline.com
“Though Suleiman Abba has told us that 28 officers are affected, if you look at the list critically, you would realise that many of the officers retained their positions.”
He added that the party was studying the situation to know how to go about it.
