The Kwara House of Assembly on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Justice Sulaiman Kawu as the new Chief Judge of the state after 15 minutes of screening him.
Kawu was nominated by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed who sent his name to the House last Wednesday as the current Chief Justice, Ayinla Bamigbola, would retire Friday.
In his letter to the House, Ahmed said Kawu had been recommended by the National Judicial Council for the appointment, adding that his name was nominated for screening and confirmation in line with section 271 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
After asking him some questions about his profile, the Majority Leader of the House, Alhaji Abdulkareem Abdulganiyu, moved a motion that Kawu should take a bow and leave the floor of the House since the lawmakers can vouch for him as a sound and effective administrator of justice. This motion was seconded by Kamaldeen Fagbemi.
After the motion was accepted by the lawmakers, Speaker Razak Atunwa directed the Clerk, Mr. Oyetunde Oyeniyi, to inform the governor of the confirmation.
Kawu was born on 4th January 1958 and had served as acting Chief Judge in the Kwara State between 2010 and 2012.
