Some 124 prisoners have been freed by gunmen armed with grenades and heavy fire arms from the Nigeria Federal Prison, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State.

According to eyewitnesses and residents of the environment, activities leading to the break began around 10 pm on Sunday, with gunshots and sounds of grenades taking over the air.

“The security operatives on duty made efforts to deter the attackers, but they were just no matche for their fire power,” a resident said.

A similar jailbreak was attempted in the same prison in year 2012.  The 2012 jailbreak in which 200 inmates were freed, which also claimed the life of a prison warden, was blamed on members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
