An early morning fire on Friday got the Rivers State secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital razed down.
The secretariat is located along the Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway in Port Harcourt, and is believed to have been set on fire by some unknown people.
To enable them perfect their plot, they tied the guard they met and warned him against any refusal to co-operate with them.
The fire incident occurred less than 24 hours after 15 governorship aspirants of the platform of the party held a rally where they insisted on power rotation and warned President Goodluck Jonathan and the party’s national leadership against supporting former Minister of Education and current aspirant for the governorship of the state, Nyesom Wike.
They claimed that Wike was the source of the crisis in the party and that he was making plans to hijack the party structure.
There has been crisis in the party between Wike and some top party members. Wike has also been tackling the State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who has vowed to ensure that the PDP does not have any headway in the coming elections.
Jerry Needam, Special Adviser to the party chairman, Felix Obuah, who confirmed it, said though the early arrival of the State fire service helped to put out the fire, the fire did some damage to the building.
Obuah also said the was carried out by desperate politicians who want the party to postpone the party’s ward and local Government Congresses scheduled to take place on Saturday.
He however said the congress would go on as planned and that nothing can stop it.
He said there were some desperate politicians in the State who have been threatening the party. He however did not state if these set of politicians are within his party or in other parties.
