Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has switched lanes, moving from  from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform on which he was elected, into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tambuwal announced his move on Tuesday in Abuja.

In a precisely calculated move which came after Mulikat Akande-Adeola, the House leader had moved a motion for the adjournment of sitting till 3rd December, Tambuwal let the cat out of the bag.

“In pursuit of the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and in view of the political developments in my state, I wish to formally inform you of my membership of the APC,” Tambuwal announced.

He said the move is a great sacrifice, targeted at ensuring the continued development of constitutional democracy in the country.

Commenting on the speaker’s action, APC members in the House described the move as historic.

“The move is consistent with the law,” Femi Gbajabiamila, leader of the APC caucus said. “APC members would continue to support the current leadership.”

Samson Osagie also added that the adjournment of House sittings till 3rd December would enable the legislators to consult with their constituencies and promote their political interest ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Osagie expressed confidence that PDP would not kick against the leadership of the house, saying The unity in the House suffices to take care of that.

He further described Tambuwal as a bridge builder who united the house in spite of different political affiliations of members of the parliament.

Tambuwal became Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2011.
