A total of 135 Boko Haram members have surrendered with their weapons to the Nigerian troops around Biu Local Government Area in Borno State, The Nigerian Military has said.

According to a statement by the Defence Headquarters on Wednesday, 88 members of the extremist sect surrendered at Mairiga/Bun – Yadi, while 45 others were overpowered around Mubi – Michika on Tuesday evening.

In the past weeks, two groups of the fighters had surrendered their arms in the same state. The terrorists are being interrogated in line with global best practices, the Defence Headquarters said.

The DHq commended the courage of the Nigerian troops for standing fast and holding onto professionalism in prosecuting the challenging campaign against terror.

“Everybody is required to remain alert to ensure that we are not taken unawares by terrorist elements who might want to carry-out isolated attacks in any part of our country,” the statement from the DHq read.

DHq also applauded Cameroon and other neighbouring countries for joining in the fight against the terrorists.

The Nigerian Military assured that it would maintain its efforts to defeat Boko Haram and attain sustainable peace in Nigeria. It also urged Nigerians to be vigilant and cooperate with security forces to ensure that terrorists do not carry out attacks in other parts of Nigeria.
