An explosion at the Federal College of Education, Kano, Kano State has killed 15 people including the bombers, security agencies have confirmed.
According to the Police, the explosion occurred around 2pm and was followed by serious gun battle that left terrorists dead and the school premises deserted for hours.
Kano State Police Commissioner Aderinle Shinaba narrated that the bombing was carried out by two armed men who detonated Improvised Explosive Devices at the lecture Hall of the tertiary institution on Zaria Road, Kano.
The Police said they engaged the remaining terrorists in a shootout outside the premises, after the bomb had gone off.
“Police team from a nearby Tactical Operations Point responded and shot dead the two insurgents. Their AK 47 rifles were recovered,” a statement by the police headquarters noted.
“On examination of the scene of the explosion, 15 dead bodies were recovered, while 34 injured were taken to hospital for treatment.”
The Police said it has sealed the scene of crime and commenced investigation.
Reacting to the sad incidence, President Goodluck Jonathan issued a statement in commiseration with citizens and residents of the state on the loss of lives occasioned by the terrorist attack on the citadel of learning.
“President Jonathan’s sympathies and best wishes for a speedy recovery are also with all those who suffered injuries in the dastardly attack,” Reuben Abati, the president’s aide on media and publicity assured in the statement.
“The President commends the officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force who took prompt action to confront the attackers and minimize resultant casualties.”
Jonathan urged the Police to be more alert and proactive in the future to stop terrorist attacks in Kano and other parts of the country.
He reassured the people of Kano and all Nigerians that the government is putting in continued effort to further enhance the ability of the Police, Armed Forces and other security agencies to prosecute the war against terrorism to a successful conclusion and provide greater security of lives and property across the country.
