In a bid to prevent criminals from creating fakes, President Goodluck Jonathan has on Wednesday launched a newly designed 64-page electronic e-passport for Nigerians.
The launch took place at the presidential villa, Abuja, where Jonathan also observed that apart from the security features added, the e-passport would also be very useful for frequent travellers.
Jonathan expressed sympathy for the frequent travellers who earlier, had to change passports almost on a monthly basis to avoid being impersonated. He noted that there would be security challenges if the passport could be easily faked by criminals, observing that Nigeria has a robust relationship with key countries, enabling the citizens to travel frequently with ease.
“One thing one must know today is that it is not the issue of 64-page passport that is key to Nigerians but the security,” Jonathan said. “If our passport could be easily faked by criminals, then we will have problems. One thing again is how Nigerians can be able to get passport easily especially those living outside this country.”
